Planning a babymoon overseas? Traveling internationally with a bun in the oven? Here are some things to take into consideration to help you prepare for any eventuality and ensure the safety of you and your baby.
#1 Always consult your OBGYN or Midwife to ensure you are safe to travel in your condition. Ask for a copy of your prenatal records and contact info for your provider to take with you in case you need to go to a hospital or get checked out while on vacation.
#2 Choose your destination with care and prepare accordingly. You may want to take note of availability of medical care. Take into consideration that hot climates can often cause dehydration which can lead to contractions so make sure to DRINK WATER! A hydrated baby is a happy baby.
#3 Because pregnant women are at a higher risk for developing blood clots it is important to take frequent breaks and stand up and walk around, especially while flying on a plane. Stretching your legs and moving around can prevent clots and other complications. This is applicable during pregnancy and in the postpartum period as well.
#4 Often we tend to dismiss things while in vacation mode. Don’t. If you’re not sure if the baby is moving as much, get it checked out. If you’re not sure if your water broke or if you peed your pants, get it checked out. If you have a bad headache that’s turning into a migraine and won’t go away even though you took tylenol, get it checked out. Don’t blame it on the sun, lack of sleep or local cuisine; if it bothers you enough, get it checked out.
#5 Pack a travel med kit with all of your prescription medications and supplements. Get a custom travel med pack like the one offered by JetSet Meds to fill you up on prescriptions that are safe for pregnancy.
#6 Consider purchasing travel insurance that covers pregnancy related complications so that in the case of an emergency you and your baby are covered.
